In the early days of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the Chinese Navy, based on the country’s actual economic and technological conditions, pursued the “air, submarine, and speed” policy, that is, the development of fighters, submarines, and speedboats. Therefore, the surface ship forces are equipped with a large number of light and small speedboats and escort boats, lacking large destroyers and frigates. After the strategic adjustment of the Navy in the 1960s, in order to effectively ensure the needs of deep-sea voyages of nuclear submarines and the deployment of ships in the far seas for long-range intercontinental missile tests, China put the task of developing a new type of destroyer on the agenda. In 1957, with the efforts of many parties, China obtained some technical design drawings and materials of the Type 56 gun and torpedo destroyer. At the same time, the Navy also established a research institute to start the discussion of the destroyer development plan. In February 1959, the Navy proposed the idea of developing a new type of missile destroyer. The First Department of Ship Product Design Institute of the First Machinery Industry Ministry completed the sketch design at the end of that year. On this basis, the Navy Research Department built the Type 051 destroyer based on the Type 56K destroyer as the prototype. In this video, the People’s Navy was unable to obtain relevant research data such as missiles, so it modified the Type 051 destroyer with artillery and torpedoes. The ship replaced the Type 76 twin 130mm naval gun with the Type 79 twin 100mm naval gun, and the firing rate was increased to 60 rounds per second. The good firing rate plus the semi-armor-piercing shells can cause continuous attacks on the enemy. The torpedo armament retains a five-tube torpedo launcher, which allows the ship to have a certain ability to fight against large ships. In terms of anti-submarine, China imported the Bofors 357mm anti-submarine rocket launcher during the honeymoon period with Western countries. In this video, this type of anti-submarine mortar has a range of 3.8 kilometers and can freely control the firing angle to attack enemy submarines without blind spots. The ship can also detect enemy warships in advance through its new radar and take advantage of the attack in advance.
