Customizable Universal Charging Dock

Having a charging dock for you phone is nice. But the problem is that you need a new one every time you change phone and it won’t fit if you have added a cover or battery pack. That is not a problem any more.

This thing is a customizable phone dock for both Android, iPhone and almost all phones that have the connector at the bottom.

Simply print the base dock (UniversalDockBase.stl) and use the customizer to fit the top holder to your phone. Then customise the connector adapter to your cable or choose one of the included ones if you have a pretty standard cable.

When you get a new phone or add a cover to your existing one you can simply print a new top holder and/or a new connector adapter.

Update:
I have added an option to add extra support on the top holder to hold the phone better on board a car or boat.

Update2:
I have added two experimental options for the connector holder:

An offset to let you finely adjust the connector a bit to the right or left
An option to add an extra 10 mm of depth if you have a very thick cover or battery pack

Instructions:

Prepare
Look through all the images and the video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=grWQgDPk3Ps). There are quite a bit of information there. Then prepare: All measures are in millimetre (mm). Measure the width of your phone. Including any cover that you use. Then measure the length from the back of the phone to the back of the connector. Please see the images at the top to learn what “the back of the connector” means. This is the “phone depth”.

Then you have to decide what connector type you need. I have included adapters for Apple Lightning, Apple iPhone4/iPod and a standard Sony Micro USB.

If you don’t use one of those connectors then use the included customizer to make an adapter that fits your plug. Measure the width, depth and height of your connector and enter the values in the customizer.

Print
I have printed mine on my LulzBot Mini using both PLA and ABS. You need to rotate the parts into place. The base is printed standing upright like it will when finished. No support needed. The top holder needs to be flipped in your software and printed upside down. No support needed. The connector adapter is printed standing upright at its 10 degrees angle. That way it can also print with no support.

Finish
The parts fits very tight. You probably need to do a little bit of sanding or cutting off excess edges in the bottom where you insert the connector adapter. Use bits of tape on the connector itself and the chord if it does not fit tight. You want the connector to sit tight so that it won’t loose when you remove your phone.

I use double sided tape to fix the dock to my desk so that I can easily insert and remove the phone with one hand without having to hold the dock with the other hand.

Removing the top holder to exchange it can be hard. Use a thin screw driver and press it in between the base and the top holder at the back and twist slightly to loosen the top.
