Geared Spring Crossbow

Geared Spring Crossbow

IMPORTANT — If you read nothing else, please just read these 3 items:

1.) This project is DANGEROUS. Not only to whatever might be in front of it, but to the user as well. It has no safety at the moment. It has components where you could easily catch a finger or hair. It has moving components that slam back at your face. I have not done proper testing, failure analysis, or FEA yet. PLEASE BE SMART.

2.) This is a prototype. Things aren’t finalized, and there are many components that I’ve already planned improvements for. I’ll have a list of these up soon.

3.) This is a mechanical novelty, it isn’t meant to be a high performance weapon or anything. I’m well aware that I’m wasting a ton of energy accelerating a bunch of mass that is then suddenly stopped. That’s not the point. The point is that it looks badass.

Post-Printing

All screws and nuts are M3. In this current version, screw lengths are non-standard, so you will need to cut some to length.

I’ll have better info here later. Parts list, assembly guide, etc.
Planned Updates

Below is a list of my planned updates, in the general order I plan on tackling them:

Changes to the “Arm” part. Will include a string tensioning mechanism.
Changes to the trigger mechanism. Right now, it has extra unnecessary screws that were meant to limit travel. Other changes to the layout will come as well, including more space for rubber bands or tension springs.
Changes to the “Barrel Block” part. I plan to divide this into 3 or 4 pieces. This will allow for greater precision and less friction, and will make the bow more modular. I intend for this project to give more options to the user in terms of draw distance and spring length. This will help facilitate that.
Changes to the “Front Spring Capture” parts. I plan on changing these from a two piece construction to a three piece, and have more options available for a wider variety of springs.
Changes to the frame connections for more rigid construction.
Force/velocity calculator

Far in the future:

Alternative bolt-less layout for better performance. With priming pump and conventional-style catch mechanism.
