An OpenSCAD design for a 15cm/6″ sphere speaker using a 4″ SEAS full range driver. It includes a built in wall mount.

I’ve only tested the “satellite” non-tweeter version. The version with a tweeter pod still needs some work as I haven’t really thought about how to secure the tweeter. Maybe just a ring glued/welded in place?
Instructions

I’ve only tested the non tweeter (satellite) versions.

You will need a printer that can print in 150x150x150mm volume. I printed the ones in the images with a 178mm diameter kossel mini.

I used a pair of SEAS H1600-04 FU10RB full range drivers, you should be able to edit the OpenSCAD files if you wanted to use slightly smaller drivers e.g. 3.5″ Tangband or something else.

Print with the baffle towards the build plate of the printer. The baffle is the only part that absolutely needs support, depending on your printer/material you are printing, you may need to add support in the wall mount.

For print settings I’d recommend at least two walls and 3 top/bottom layers. I used roughly 330g of PLA per housing, and each had a print time of around 10 hours using an e3d v6 with 0.4mm hot end. Next time I print them think I’ll use an e3d volcano with a 0.8 nozzle, should help speed things up a bit.

I find simplify3d produces nice support material, especially if you Add at least 1 solid top layer to it. Applying a layer of silicone bathroom sealant to the baffle and letting it dry before adding the driver helps seal the unit.

I used a couple of binding posts, although they were threaded with a nut a washer to secure them, I heated up the binding post with a soldering iron to seat them nicely in the plastic.

I added a 4 or 5 small (maybe 120x120mm?) sheets of polyfil or similar fibre material before screwing the driver in.

The satellites sound pretty good as desktop speakers, although they sound better with a sub and some eq, I tried them out with my home cinema setup and you could definitely create a decent sounding little setup with 5 of these plus a sub and receiver.
